SOUND THERAPY

WHAT IS SOUND THERAPY?

The root of “Sound Healing” Therapy is the idea that frequencies, certain methods of auditory input, and immersion in intentional sonic spaces can have beneficial impact.

Sound healing begins in the womb when our ears and senses first come alive. The first thing we hear is our mother’s heartbeat, a beacon of life, rhythm and comfort. If we were lucky we were born into an environment filled with positive sonic information, kind words and lullabies. We take in our world through sounds and silence. Through listening we know and sense safety vs. danger, familiar vs. unfamiliar and inviting vs. repelling. Sound healing manifests in how we speak to each other and ourselves.

Science is exploring the hows and whys of these truths. Evidence leads to the beliefs that certain applications of frequencies, hertz levels and rhythms can inspire deep changes in human physiology, chemically and physically.

“Sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our fluctuating brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwave can attune to. By using rhythm and frequency, we can entrain our brainwaves and it then becomes possible to down-shift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can occur).”

Experientially and repeatedly so, music and well crafted sounds can inspire joy and sadness and everything in between. Sounds can invoke memories and emotions. I’ve known it to induce deep states of mediation and catharsis by way of laughter or tears. I’ve witnessed it shift negative self talk into kindness, tenderness and wonder.

In my practice, in private sessions as well as in group experiences, I use a collection of instruments such as singing bowls, drums, chimes and rattles. I also call on my voice, in the form of song, chanting and whistling. A musician before I ever even heard the term “Sound Healing”, I find it a joy to create and to share healing work simultaneously.

The intention is to invite stillness, soothing, self reflection.  Deep changes are possible by way of music and sound. I believe music IS the Universal language of connection and healing and I believe it is a birthright to create and to listen.

Sound Therapy

Resonant. Deepening. Heart Opening.

I am happy to weave sound and vibration into a bodywork sessions. A few minutes of being bathed in the frequency of singing bowls or chimes can be a perfect addition to a bodywork session. The body relaxes, the mind follows . . .
